The Story

“the luminescents overwhelmed us—they separated the men from the women— the men were forced to work to build these giant rotators which came to dominate the skyline—the women were violated in breeding experiments—we called these beasts the luminescents because they glowed—we had no viable response to their arrival—weapons were useless against them and any attempt by an individual to harm a luminescent was met with an horrific death—the injuries inflicted by their tentacles were always fatal—we thought there was no hope—until one summer evening, I found something on the beach that proved to be fatal to a luminescent—sand which contained a bioluminescent algae—I alone was able to kill dozens of these beasts and, as word spread and hundreds more died— they finally went back to where they came from and we thought it was all over—but history, if one is ever recorded after these events, will testify that the moment I picked up that sand was the beginning of the end of the world— for the luminescents were, in fact, the last and only remaining salvation from our fate and their vengeance for my actions knew no limit”

overture (dunwich beach)

Families were enjoying a summer afternoon on Dunwich Beach unaware that, gathering in the waters out of sight, an army of sea-creatures was massing.

salamanca colours

The Salamanca Eagle, a French regimental standard captured at the Battle of Salamanca in Spain in 1812 is the iconic emblem of the Essex Regiment of the British Army.  The Essex Regiment, based at Colchester were the first to respond to reports of what was thought to be a terrorist attach on sunbathers at Dunwich Beach.

the luminescents

Armed with lethal poisonous tentacles, a distributed nervous and circulatory system that made them unstoppable by traditional weaponry, the creatures murdered anyone and everyone that hindered their progress.  Seemingly telepathic, they surrounded and destroyed the first platoon of soldiers sent to respond to the emergency.  On account of their multi-coloured transparent luminescent bodies, we started to call them 'The Luminescents'.

the hand of time

It became clear as the days and weeks passed that all attempts to resist these monsters were futile.  It also became clear that their main objective seemed to be to control our economic activity.  They arbritrarily confined people to their homes and restricted our freedom to mix with each other.  Pubs, restaurants, shops (except for food) all closed.  Our lives ground to a halt.

turn of the rotator

Able bodied men were separated from their families and forced to build towers.  We could only speculate the purpose of these towers.  Perhaps they aided Luminescent telepathic communication, or, as these towers dominated every skyline, perhaps they were no more than a visual symbol and daily reminder of the dominance the Luminescents had achieved over mankind.

face the sun

Due to the creation of the light box, a device that could emulate the Luminescents light-based communication we were able to have some basic communication with them.  At the top of our list we expressed our wishes to be reunited with our wives and families.  The Luminescents acquiesced and for a time we were able to live in some semblance of normality.

exeunt terra sinister

I noticed that the Luminescents were afraid of approaching water where bioluminescent algae were present.  So I picked up some sand from the beach where I could see the glowing and threw it at a luminescent.  I expected to be killed instantly in revenge for my impertinence.  But instead the Luminescent quivered and died in front of me.  I spread the word.  We had found a way to kill and perhaps beat them.  After weeks of battle with heavy losses on both sides (including people who fought on the side of the Luminescents), en masse, they slithered back into the depths of the sea and exited our lives.

return of fire

Our lives slowly returned to a kind of normal.  Some people had got used to traffic free roads, not having to commute and not having to visit family and freinds so positively missed the Luminescent regime.  Some people wanted to forget the episode like it never happened.   Newspapers and governments however constantly cited threat of the return of the Luminescents as a reason to have new strict controls over our lives.

What we did not know was that deep in the oceans, the Luminescents had concluded that humans were beyond saving from our own folly, and returned, not to dominate and control us as they had done before, but this time, to destroy us.
